Upon separation from County service, employees and their dependents enrolled in a medical and/or dental plan have two options to continue their health plan coverage; the Group Continuation Plan or the Individual Conversion Plan.  Both of these options provide for continued coverage for designated periods of time.

Qualifying Events to Make Changes (add or delete dependents)
Add dependent:  You will have the option to add dependents during the plan year as long as you contact Employee Benefits Service Unit (EBSU) within sixty (60) days of the qualifying event.  Examples:  Marriage, newborn, adoption, loss of coverage

Delete dependent:  It is your responsibility to inform EBSU if a dependent is no longer eligible to a dependent on your health plan.  Example:  Divorce, death

Open Enrollment
The annual open enrollment period allows you to make changes to your health and dental coverage, and to add or to delete dependents without a qualifying event.

Be advised that the health plan open enrollment period and the dental plan open enrollment period do not occur at the same time.  You must make CalPERS health plan open enrollment changes during CalPERS open enrollment period.  The County holds a separate open enrollment for dental plans.  Do not assume that changes you make to your health plan automatically update your dental plan or vice versa.  Our office will advise you of the times of both open enrollment periods annually.
